Off-channel habitat and restoration potential on the Deadman River

Off-channel habitat is critical for all life stages of salmon, from egg to old spawner. The Deadman River, located in traditional Skeetchestn territory, has experienced dramatic floodplain loss, with severe consequences for local salmon populations. For my graduate research, I am working alongside the Skeetchestn Indian Band, Secwepemc Fisheries Commission, and the DFO to study side channels on the Deadman with the goals of better understanding local habitat conditions and informing restoration efforts across BC.

I have always been deeply interested in the intricate connections of the natural world, a concept which quickly drew me to ecology. I studied Biology at Queen's University before finding myself on the West Coast of Vancouver Island, where I was hooked into the world of salmon and habitat restoration. I'm excited and grateful to continue this journey in the REM program at SFU!
