In partnership with Ha’oom Fisheries Society, my master’s research is focused on developing a deeper understanding of the current health of cuw̓it (coho salmon) populations within the traditional territories of five Nuu-chah-nulth Nations (Ahousaht, Ehattesaht, Mowachaht/Muchalaht, Hesquiaht and Tla-o-qui-aht). Cuw̓it are intrinsically linked to the Nuu-chah-nulth worldview, but the alarming declines experienced in the watersheds within this region have begun to threaten these nations' cultural integrity and food security. Thus, I will be working to develop a habitat-based capacity model to assess the suitability of the available freshwater habitat within this region for juvenile cuw̓it as well as developing biological benchmarks of population health.
